Aiken’s pedestrian dining lane. Park on Laurens or Newberry, walk between the brick, and the street is the patio. Tables on the cobble. Dogs at your feet. Thursday nights, Amp the Alley puts a band in the middle of supper.
What it is
The Alley is not a mall and it is not Augusta. It is one brick corridor off Laurens Street that Aiken turned into a restaurant district in the early 1980s — Up Your Alley opened here in 1982 — and that the city still treats as downtown’s living room. You do not drive it. You walk it. Kitchens face the lane. The taproom will let you carry food from two doors down. Relocators asking “where do we eat downtown?” mean this block.
